Well, it’s not for our own convenience, or to satisfy our egos.  It’s not even so we can do what we have been asked to do.

    is the top of the dome really that curved??

    Yup, it is. But with the human eye, you don’t notice it so much because you tend to compensate. It’s a 50mm lens, not wide angle, that took the picture.
